On Sunday 6 July 2025, Simon Groot, founder of East-West Seed, passed away at the age of 90. Simon played a pivotal global role in developing the seed sector and improving food security, particularly in Asia. He was renowned as a visionary leader with a big heart for farmers, colleagues, and staff worldwide.

Passion for seed

From founding East-West Seed in 1982, Simon championed small-scale farmers in tropical regions. His mission was simple yet powerful: with the right knowledge and quality vegetable seeds, even farmers on tiny plots can boost their harvests and livelihoods. Under his leadership, East-West Seed became a leading international force, impacting over 60 countries. Even after retirement, Simon regularly visited the office and continued inspiring others with his ideas.

World Food Prize acknowledges lifetime achievement

Simon was celebrated for his entrepreneurship, strategic vision, and social commitment. In 2019, he received the prestigious World Food Prize, honoring his lifetime dedication to sustainable agriculture and global food security. His practical, forward-thinking, and people-centric approach continues to shape the next generation at East-West Seed and across the industry.

The board, staff, and members of Seed Valley are grateful for Simon Groot’s profound global impact on the seed sector.
