“I contribute to the research and breeding activities aimed at developing pepper varieties resistant against thrips.”

What you are going to do

Thrips are minute insects what devastating consequences in vegetable cultivation. Insecticide bans, insecticide resistance, wide host-range, global spread, and quick generation times make thrips especially difficult to control. The solution? Host plant resistance! And here is where you come in!

  • You will be based in the phytopathology department, working closely with our molecular and breeding departments.
    • Your research includes the development and optimization of high throughput digital phenotyping protocols and testing these methods to discover new resistance mechanisms in wild pepper varieties.

Natural talent

  • You are fascinated by plant / insect interactions and would like to experience the field of entomology in an industrial setting.
  • You are open to learn new ideas and techniques
  • You can work both in a team as independently, critically assessing experimental setups, data, and innovative ideas.
  • You are creative, a team player and a good communicator.
  • You are a student enrolled in a BSc or MSc biology education;
  • You have basic knowledge about plant genetics and entomology;
  • You have some affinity with data analysis (prior know how on R and ImageJ are most welcome);
  • You are available for six months, starting early 2023;
  • You are fluent in English.
